Cape Breton By Request, as the title suggests, features many of the most popular recordings to come out of Cape Breton in recent years. From the perennial favourite "Song For The Mira" to the classic recordings of "Rise Again" and "The Island", this collection was assembled based on popular requests at music stores and on local radio. Many of the tracks on Cape Breton By Request are no longer available as the original releases are "out of print" or difficult to find. One track, "Fare Thee Well Love", was recorded exclusively for this compilation. The Rankin Family's biggest hit was rerecorded by eleven year old Fiona MacGillivray, daughter of songwriter Allister MacGillivray, and produced by the ECMA award winning team of Gordie Sampson and Fred Lavery. This series of compilations are musical collections aimed at preserving Cape Breton recordings and promoting local singers, songwriters and musicians. These songs are an integral part of the islands popular culture: some have reached an international audience; others are local favourites. All offer a glimpse, a musical snapshot, of that magical kingdom known as Cape Breton Island. Cape Breton By Request Volume 2 combines old favourites such as Plain Ole Miner Boy and The Legend Of Kellys Mountain with such contemporary classics as Matt Minglewoods Me and the Boys and J.P. Cormiers Another Morning. Here, on CD for the first time, are Sam Moons Midday Matinee, Millers Jugs Ghost of Bras dOr and Fred Laverys Song For Noel. This collection also features Doris Mason with Leon Dubinskys anthemic One World (a worthy follow-up to Rise Again), Cheticamps Ronald Bourgeois with Amène le vent and Howie MacDonalds classic fiddle treatment of The Skye Boat Song. Other artists include musical legends Rita MacNeil and John Allan Cameron, McGinty, Cyril MacPhee, Maxine MacLeod and Buddy and the Boys. |
